Uttarakhand Government opens 15 New Trails and Treks for Hikers!

Known for its Mountains, Rivers, Wildlife, and Snow, Uttarakhand is now going to be a treat for trekkers and hikers too. Though the state already consists of a few trekking sites, 15 new and different trekking sites have been identified in the state as per the Forest Conservator of the Yamuna Circle, Mr. Vinay Bhargav. This addition will open doors to new experiences for trekkers and hikers in the state and also will provide a variety of treks to choose from depending on your comfort, budget and stay duration.

Q. How long can the treks in Uttarakhand be and what are the accommodation options available?

Mr. Bhargav also added that one can choose a route involving 2.5 km trek a day to 65 km-long treks that last a week. In the long treks such as 65 km trek, trekkers will also get the opportunity of homestay and natural camps. Apart from this, people will also get to stay in Britishers rest house as a part of a few treks which is a cherishing experience for all.

Q. What are the new and different trekking sites identified in Uttarakhand?

According to forest officials, of the 15 identified trails, nine are rarely visited by outsiders and have almost no human habitation with being situated in dense forest.Some of the trek sites include trails such as Mundali, Deoban, Budher, Konain, Kanasar, Kahtiyan, Naada, Kudog, Jakh, and Daragad. The forest officials will keep the safety in mind along with the adventurous experience.

Along with the beautiful dense forests, the stargazing experience (such as at Molta) makes these treks a close to perfect choice for hikers and trekkers of all ages and groups. The local villagers and van panchayats are expected to be a supporting system in the management of these treks.

Q: When will the Thadiyar March trek be opened to the public?

The 65km long trek, ‘Thadiyar March’ will be opened to the public in the month of april itself, as per the officials. All the other treks are expected to open gradually after that. ‘Thadiyar March’ trail was developed in the era of Britishers in order to teach the young forest service probationers about forest in general.The trail consists of hills ranging from 542m elevation to 3067m in the Chakrata area.

Q: What is the significance of the Chakrata area in Uttarakhand?

DFO Chakrata, Kalyani Negi added that Chakrata is famous for having Asia’s oldest Deodar woodlands, archaeological sites and diverse avian population.
